  1. I totally agree that a lack of understanding of games and lacks of consideration of any sort of fun factor is why these type project can fail.

    The issue with a lot of “gamification” is a lack of understanding of what makes games fun. A leaderboard in and of itself isn’t an engaging element, but it isn’t in a game either. I would say the issues with unsuccessful gamification projects are much the same with unsuccessful game projects: lack of fun factor that leads to lack of engagement by the player. There are a lot of Serious Games that deliver a lot of “heavy” messages by successfully using the same mechanics as popular social games.

    Here is a great recent article by Karl Kapp that talks about getting engaging mechanics into gamification experiences to boost user/player engagement. They are also a lot of elements that go into creating a successful game.
